CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Elaine was at her desk putting the final touches on a contract for a wedding reception when Tom came in.

“There’s a woman here to see you.” He made a slight adjust-ment to the position of one of the chairs in front of her desk.

Elaine’s heart leapt. Laurel was back.

Tom must have seen the look on her face, because a deep look of sadness crossed his as he rushed on. “Her name is Lou Petry.”

“Lou?” Elaine felt as though she had been punched in the gut.

She flinched when she noticed a look that she construed as pity in Tom’s eyes. Of course it wasn’t Laurel. He knew Laurel and wouldn’t have announced her. Elaine took a deep breath. “Send her in.”

Tom started to say something but stopped when he saw her warning look. He nodded instead and rushed out of her office.

Elaine wondered what Lou was doing here. She had never been by to visit before. In fact they had never even had lunch together.
